Maj. Gen. William M. Miley (1897-1997)
April 1943 - Inactivation. Gen. Miley commanded the 17th Airborne throughout World War II from the division's activation at Camp Mackall in April 1943 until the end of the war. Gen. Miley would later command the 8th Infantry Division and 11th Airborne Division. He retired in 1955.
