Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Keyes (1888-1967)
June 1942 - September 1942. Gen. Keyes later commanded the II Corps, Seventh Army, and Third Army. Gen. Keyes retired in 1954, and he died in 1967.
Maj. Gen. John W. Leonard (1890-1974)
October 1942 - Inactivation. Gen. Leonard led the 9th Armored throughout its combat in Europe. Gen. Leonard later commanded the 20th Armored Division. In the 1950s, he commanded the V Corps and XVIII Airborne Corps. Gen. Leonard retired in 1952. He died in 1974 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
