- Maj. Gen. Walter C. Short
- October 1938 - September 1940. Gen. Short is more well-known as the commander
in charge of the Pearl Harbor defenses when the Japanese attacked in 1941. Gen. Short
died in 1949.

- October 1940 - December 1940.
- Maj. Gen. Donald C. Cubbison
- January 1941 - May 1942.
- Maj. Gen. Terry Allen
- May 1942 - August 1943. Gen. Allen led the 1st Infantry Division in North
Africa and Sicily, and later commanded the
104th Infantry Division
from October 1943 until the end of the war. Gen. Allen also formerly commanded
the 4th Infantry Division in 1941.
- Maj. Gen. Clarence R. Huebner
- Assumed command August 1943. [See below.]
- Brig. Gen. Willard G. Wyman (Acting)
- Assumed command December 1943. Gen. Wyman served briefly as acting commander. He
later served as commander of
the 71st Infantry Division
from November 1944 - August 1945.
- Maj. Gen. Clarence R. Huebner
- Assumed command December 14, 1943. Gen. Huebner fought with 1st Infantry in WWI. He
commanded the 1st Infantry during the Normandy invasion, breakout, and pursuit. In January
1945, Gen. Huebner assumed command of the V Corps which he led until the German
surrender. Gen. Huebner retired from service in 1950 and died in 1972.
- Brig Gen Clift Andrus (Acting)
- Assumed command December 1944. Gen. Andrus formerly served as
Artillery Commander of the 1st Infantry Division in all the major WWII campaigns.
- Brig. Gen. Clift Andrus
- Assumed command December 1944. Gen. Andrus was promoted to Major
General in March 1945. He retired in 1952. He died September 1968, and is
buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
