- Maj. Gen. Charles F. Thompson
- July 1940 - August 1941.
- Brig. Gen. Charles P. Hall
- August 1941 - September 1941. Gen. Hall was born in 1886 in Mississippi, and he graduated
from West Point in 1911. Gen. Hall later commanded the
93rd Infantry Division and the XI Corps in the Pacific Theater.
- Maj. Gen. John P. Lucas
- September 1941 - March 1942. Gen. Lucas later commanded the VI Corps at Anzio. He was
relieved from VI Corps command in February 1944 and he returned to the U.S.
for further commands.
- Maj. Gen. Jonathan W. Anderson
- March 1942 - March 1943.
- Maj. Gen. Lucian K. Truscott, Jr.
- March 1943 - February 1944. Gen. Truscott commanded the 3rd Infantry Division in
the Sicily and Italy campaigns. Gen. Truscott left the division to command VI Corps
in February 1944. He later commanded Fifteenth Army, Fifth Army, and Third Army.
- Maj. Gen. John W. O'Daniel
- February 1944 - December 1945. Nicknamed "Iron Mike", Gen. O'Daniel later
served as commander of the Infantry School at Fort Benning and commander of
I Corps in Korea.
