Maj. Gen. Wade H. Haislip (1889-1971)
May 1942 - February 1943. Gen. Haislip later commanded the XV Corps through France and Germany. He also commanded Seventh Army after the end of hostilities in Europe. Gen. Haislip served as Vice Chief of Staff U.S. Army from 1949 to 1951. He retired in 1951.
Maj. Gen. John B. Coulter
February 1943 - Inactivation. Gen. Coulter commanded the 85th during its entire time in combat. Prior to joining the 85th, he had briefly commanded the 2nd Cavalry Division in 1942. He later commanded the I Corps and IX Corps.
