Maj. Gen. Charles L. Scott
July 1940 - January 1941. Gen. Scott was the original commander of the 2nd on its formation at Fort Benning. Gen. Scott was later promoted to command I Armored Corps.
Maj. Gen. George S. Patton, Jr. (1885-1945)
January 1941 - February 1942. One of the most famous U.S. generals of WWII, Gen. Patton later commanded the I Armored Corps, II Armored Corps, Seventh Army, and Third Army during WWII. He died in 1945 in a traffic accident in Europe.
Maj. Gen. Willis D. Crittenberger (1890-1980)
February 1942 - July 1942. Gen. Crittenberger later commanded several corps including II Armored Corps, XIX Corps, and IV Corps.
Maj. Gen. Ernest N. Harmon
July 1942 - April 1943. [See details under 1st Armored Division.]
Maj. Gen. Hugh J. Gaffey (1895-1946)
May 1943 - April 1944.
Maj. Gen. Edward H. Brooks (1893-1978)
April 1944 - September 1944. Gen. Brooks commanded the 11th Armored Division during its formation and training. He then led the 2nd Armored during the Normandy battles and breakout. He later commanded VI Corps. After WWII, Gen. Brooks served in a variety of roles including commander of Second Army.
Maj. Gen. Ernest N. Harmon
September 1944 - January 1945. [See details under 1st Armored Division.]
Maj. Gen. Isaac D. White
January 1945 - May 1945. Gen. White's later commands include U.S. Constabulary in Europe, X Corps, Fourth Army, Eighth Army, and U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC). He died in 1990.
Brig. Gen. John H. Collier
May 1945 - August 1945. After WWII, Gen. Collier would command the I Corps and Fourth Army.
